Lora Obrohta, Artist & Writer

Lora Obrohta’s work explores the relationship between change and transformation. Through her work in watercolour and acrylics, she uses color to express the joy and delicacy of life, while emphasizing often overlooked details of the natural world, through unique angles and perspectives.

Through her own journey of transformation through Breast Cancer, its’ complications, and disability via Lymphedema, Obrohta interrogates her own surroundings and elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary.

Lora has had a soft spot for Iris x germanica, or ‘Bearded Iris,”’since her childhood in South Central Kentucky. Their low-maintenance growth (just requiring sunlight on rhizomes for those lush blooms!) and prolific reproduction in Nashville gardens are only a couple of the reasons to become a fan. It’s no wonder the ‘Bearded Iris’ is the state flower of TN. Lora grows more than 50 varietals in her Nashville garden and uses techniques from the Royal School of Botanical Artists and The American Society of Botanical Artists to draw and paint the specimens just outside her window.

On a dewy, blustery morning in early spring Barred Plymouth Rock rooster “Cluck Norris” is out among the “Henbit” (Lamium amplexicaule). Cluck loves to start his day by sassing hens and guarding the farm that is his territory.

Lora painted the original as a commission for her favorite cousin (one of a few hundred). Cluck Norris was a real rooster who delighted and entertained his favorite farmer through his life and her cancer treatment. We are grateful.

Lake Cumberland, in Kentucky spans more than 65,000 surface acres and over 1,200 miles of shoreline. This portion was taken by development, but it lives here and in my memories. A night of camping and waking before dawn to awe and wonder is one of the greatest pleasures and privileges of my childhood.
